A Note From Dr. Lee on Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty, commonly referred to as labia surgery, is a one- to two-hour outpatient procedure designed to sculpt the size and shape of the outer vaginal structures by reducing and or reshaping long or uneven labia. Many women are born with large or irregular labia, while others develop this condition after childbirth or due to the natural effects of gravity and aging. In most women, the labia minora are seen only when the legs are separated. However, in some women large labia may be noticeable when they are wearing tight-fitting pants, an embarrassing condition.
Why do women have labiaplasty?
For some women, enlarged labia can cause feelings of inhibition in intimacy, or loss of self-esteem. Chronic irritation can develop in women with overlarge labia. Additionally, women can experience discomfort during sex, sports or other physical activities. Whether you are experiencing physical or emotional discomfort, many women have found relief with this custom surgery, and are able to maintain sensation and create a youthful, natural contour of the labia with minimal scarring.
Am I a candidate for labiaplasty?
Women who are in overall good health, and who are experiencing physical or emotional discomfort due to overly-large labia may be excellent candidates for labiaplasty. If you suffer from any of the following, a consultation with Dr. Lee can help to answer any questions you have about labiaplasty and set your mind at ease.
- Feel self-conscious about excessively large, protruding, elongated or unusually shaped labia
- Suffer physical discomfort or pain when wearing tight-fitting clothing or performing physical activities (cycling, sports, or other)
- Understand both the possible risks and rewards of surgery, and feel the advantages outweigh the potential drawbacks
What should I expect during labiaplasty?
Your labiaplasty will be performed in the calm, comfortable environment of our Beverly Hills offices. Labiaplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with mild oral sedation, for your comfort. Dr. Lee will carefully trim away the excess labia tissue creating the problem, resculpting the area, and then closing the incision with sutures.
What should I expect during recovery from labiaplasty?
The most important thing for you to do during your recovery period is rest and allow your body the time it needs to heal. You may experience mild to moderate swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication provided by Dr. Lee. Warm sitz baths a few times each day can be helpful during healing. You should abstain from exercise for at least four weeks following your procedure, and from sexual activity for at least six weeks to allow your labia fully heal.
