Chin Augmentation in Beverly Hills – Dr. Richard W. Fleming
Chin augmentation, also known as chin implant surgery or genioplasty, involves the placement of a FDA-approved silicone implant to improve chin and jaw definition. This cosmetic procedure, which is designed to enhance a recessed or underdeveloped chin, is often used alongside rhinoplasty to create a more striking, balanced facial profile. Chin augmentation can also be paired with liposuction of the neck to reduce submental fullness, thereby creating leaner, more youthful jawline contours.
At his Beverly Hills plastic surgery office, Dr. Richard W. Fleming leverages his 25 years of experience to design personalized facial rejuvenation plans for each of his patients. If you’re interested in pursuing chin augmentation, either as a standalone procedure or in combination with rhinoplasty, liposuction, or facelift surgery, contact The Beverly Hills Institute to explore your options.
Why Choose Surgical Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation confers a number of cosmetic benefits:
Better facial harmony
Improving the projection of the chin can balance out a strong nose to create a more symmetrical profile. Patients with very strong noses and weak chins often achieve excellent results by combining chin augmentation with a rhinoplasty.
Improved jaw definition
By stretching lax muscles and loose skin around the jawline, a chin implant can reduce the visibility of jowls and submental fullness (a “double chin”). This effect may be improved with targeted liposuction. Chin augmentation can often make patients look years younger without the need for more invasive procedures. In patients of all ages, this procedure sculpts a more defined, photogenic jawline. It can also correct minor jaw asymmetry.
Silicone chin implants are available in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes from different manufacturers. As such, Dr. Fleming can help you choose the perfect implant size and shape to flatter your unique facial structure.
Though many plastic surgeons use injectable dermal fillers to augment chin volume, Dr. Fleming prefers the greater precision offered by silicone implants to correct a problem caused by a lack of underlying bone. Dermal fillers, while useful for many different applications, tend to “spread out” into surrounding tissues, making it difficult to sculpt the chin into a specific shape. Silicone implants, on the other hand, maintain their shape after insertion.
Unlike dermal filler injections, which must be re-administered every six to nine months, silicone implants last for a lifetime.
An excellent safety profile
Chin implants are made from 100% biocompatible medical-grade silicone. This form of silicone is non-toxic and extremely durable; it will not break down after insertion, even if the implant is left in place for many years.
Who Makes a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?
The ideal chin augmentation candidate is a healthy adult who would like to bring their chin into better proportion with their other facial features, correct a weak or recessed chin, or improve definition of the jawline. Dr. Fleming can customize chin augmentations to flatter a wide variety of face shapes.
Understanding the Chin Augmentation Procedure
To perform chin augmentation, Dr. Fleming makes a small incision just below the chin. This location is used because it effectively disguises scar tissue within the natural crease under the chin. Then, Dr. Fleming creates a pocket for the implant and carefully inserts it over the patient’s existing jawbone. Finally, the incision is closed with sutures, and the patient can return home. When performed as a standalone procedure, chin augmentation typically only takes 30-45 minutes to complete.
What to Expect During Recovery
You will need to have someone drive you home from the surgery center, and care for you the first 24 hours. The following day you will return to the office for your first post-operative visit with Dr. Fleming. Six days later, you will meet with Dr. Fleming to have your sutures removed.
Patients can expect to resume most of their normal activities, including work, within about seven days after having chin augmentation surgery. You will still need to avoid more strenuous activities for another three weeks. Dr. Fleming will let you know when you can safely exercise again.
While you recover, your chin may be taped to ensure the implant maintains optimal placement until it binds with surrounding tissues. You will also need to sleep face-up, with your head elevated.
As is the case with most cosmetic surgeries, your face will need time to adjust to the changes created by chin implant surgery. It can take three to six months for the final results of chin augmentation surgery to become fully apparent.
