Nose reshaping surgery can be an important part of redefining the body during gender transition. The nose exhibits strong masculine and feminine characteristics. Rhinoplasty as part of facial femininization surgery can improve aesthetic outcomes and help patients to achieve the more delicate, feminine facial appearance they desire.
We realize that the decision to transition is a difficult and emotional one. Dr. Fleming and the staff at The Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery are here to provide information and support as you take your next steps in this transformative process.
How Are Masculine Noses and Feminine Noses Different?
Every nose is different, but masculine and feminine noses often have characteristics that differentiate one from the other. Not every feminine nose will have every feature on the list, nor will every masculine one. The goal of facial feminization surgery is to remove some of the masculine characteristics from the nose and add in more feminine ones.
How do masculine and feminine noses differ? In general, a masculine nose is:
- Larger overall
- 90-degree angle between the nasal tip and the lip
- Wider, straighter nasal bridge
Female noses may have:
- Smaller size
- Lower bridge
- Shorter nose
- More tip definition
Remember, a beautiful nose on one patient could look out of place on another. Dr. Fleming always customizes his approach to create a nose that is uniquely yours and in balance with your other facial features.
How Does Rhinoplasty Create a More Feminine Nose?
Rhinoplasty is one tool we use in facial feminization surgery to enhance the femininity of the face’s appearance. Dr. Fleming is a rhinoplasty super-specialist and is a member of The Rhinoplasty Society, an exclusive organization for the top rhinoplasty surgeons in the U.S. He uses his advanced knowledge of surgical techniques and his experience as a board-certified facial plastic surgeon and head and neck surgeon to create balanced and beautiful rhinoplasty results.
In nasal femininization procedures, we use advanced surgical techniques to shape, contour, augment, and reduce specific areas of the nose to achieve an appearance that is more in line with traditional feminine nasal characteristics. Often feminizing the nose requires a dramatic reduction in its size. Reduction rhinoplasty must be performed carefully to ensure the nose retains the structure necessary for an open airway and easy breathing.
What’s Recovery Like After Facial Feminization Rhinoplasty?
Here’s what to expect from your rhinoplasty recovery:
- Mild discomfort- easily controlled with mild analgesics
- Nasal cast worn for the first six days
- Swelling and bruising around the eyes for up to 10 days
- Avoid strenuous activities for about two weeks
- Full results can take up to a year to see, but patients will see dramatic improvement in their nasal appearance within a few weeks
We’ll provide detailed recovery instructions. Dr. Fleming will meet with you several times during recovery to assess healing.
Other Facial Feminization Procedures to Consider
Rhinoplasty is an important addition to most facial femininization procedures, but it is not the only procedure our patients consider. Dr. Fleming may recommend other facial feminization treatments including:
- Hairline lowering or forehead reduction
- Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
- Forehead or brow lift
- Forehead contouring
- Orbital rim contouring
- Chin reduction
- Upper lip lift
- Neck lift and facelift
